We have already mentioned that Civil 3D is an excellent software for delivering BIM services. For example, Civil 3D corridors are great for designing linear infrastructures such as railways and highways.

They are however not as easy to use for designing features such as parking lots, sites, and building pads. It is possible to still use Civil 3D corridors for 3D modeling these features. However, it is much more efficient to use Civil 3D grades.

It is crucial to assess the current ground conditions and constraints after defining your needs. How much land you can use will depend on the available space and the surrounding stakeholders.

You will need to prepare the ground – commonly called 'EG’ – before you can create a Civil 3D grading. This will serve as your base or datum when comparing volume.  A feature line is the first step in creating a grading. If you don't know what feature lines are, they are similar to 'clever lines.

They are similar to intelligent 3D polylines. Because they can be modified in many ways, they are intelligent. You can change the elevation or gradient between two vertices with a single click.
